Exodus 12:21-36

Exodus Chapter 12

21Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said to them, "Draw out, and take lambs according to your families, and kill the Passover.

22You shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin; and none of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning.

23For ForeverOne will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when he sees the blood on the lintel, and on the two doorposts, ForeverOne will pass over the door, and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to strike you.

24You shall observe this thing for an ordinance to you and to your sons forever.

25It shall happen when you have come to the land which ForeverOne will give you, according as he has promised, that you shall keep this service.

26It will happen, when your children ask you, 'What do you mean by this service?' 27that you shall say, 'It is the sacrifice of ForeverOne's Passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians, and spared our houses.'" The people bowed their heads and worshiped.

28The children of Israel went and did so; as ForeverOne had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.

29It happened at midnight, that ForeverOne struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of livestock.

30Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

31He called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, "Rise up, get out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel; and go, serve ForeverOne, as you have said!

32Take both your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone; and bless me also!" 33The Egyptians were urgent with the people, to send them out of the land in haste, for they said, "We are all dead men." 34The people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading troughs being bound up in their clothes on their shoulders.

35The children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they asked of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing.

36ForeverOne gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. They despoiled the Egyptians.

1 Kings 1:1-27

1 Kings Chapter 1

1Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he couldn't keep warm.

2Therefore his servants said to him, "Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and cherish him; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may keep warm." 3So they sought for a beautiful young lady throughout all the borders of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

4The young lady was very beautiful; and she cherished the king, and ministered to him; but the king didn't know her intimately.

5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, "I will be king." Then he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

6His father had not displeased him at any time in saying, "Why have you done so?" and he was also a very handsome man; and he was born after Absalom.

7He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.

8But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.

9Adonijah killed sheep and cattle and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En Rogel; and he called all his brothers, the king's sons, and all the men of Judah, the king's servants: 10but Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he didn't call.

11Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, "Haven't you heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith reigns, and David our lord doesn't know it?

12Now therefore come, please let me give you counsel, that you may save your own life, and the life of your son Solomon.

13Go in to king David, and tell him, 'Didn't you, my lord, king, swear to your handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne? Why then does Adonijah reign?' 14Behold, while you yet talk there with the king, I also will come in after you, and confirm your words." 15Bathsheba went in to the king into the room. The king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was ministering to the king.

16Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance to the king. The king said, "What would you like?" 17She said to him, "My lord, you swore by ForeverOne your God to your handmaid, 'Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.' 18Now, behold, Adonijah reigns; and you, my lord the king, don't know it.

19He has slain cattle and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the army; but he hasn't called Solomon your servant.

20You, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, that you should tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

21Otherwise it will happen, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders." 22Behold, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.

23They told the king, saying, "Behold, Nathan the prophet!" When he had come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

24Nathan said, "My lord, king, have you said, 'Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne?' 25For he is gone down this day, and has slain cattle and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king's sons, and the captains of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and say, 'Long live king Adonijah!' 26But he hasn't called me, even me your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon.

27Is this thing done by my lord the king, and you haven't shown to your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?"

Ezra 5:14-6:12

Ezra Chapter 5

14The gold and silver vessels also of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those Cyrus the king took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; 15and he said to him, 'Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be built in its place.' 16Then the same Sheshbazzar came, and laid the foundations of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now has it been in building, and yet it is not completed.

17Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter."

Ezra Chapter 6

1Then Darius the king made a decree, and search was made in the house of the archives, where the treasures were laid up in Babylon.

2There was found at Achmetha, in the palace that is in the province of Media, a scroll, and therein was thus written for a record: 3In the first year of Cyrus the king, Cyrus the king made a decree: Concerning the house of God at Jerusalem, let the house be built, the place where they offer sacrifices, and let its foundations be strongly laid; its height sixty cubits, and its breadth sixty cubits; 4with three courses of great stones, and a course of new timber: and let the expenses be given out of the king's house.

5Also let the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought to Babylon, be restored, and brought again to the temple which is at Jerusalem, everyone to its place; and you shall put them in the house of God.

6Now therefore, Tattenai, governor beyond the River, Shetharbozenai, and your companions the Apharsachites, who are beyond the River, you must stay far from there.

7Leave the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in its place.

8Moreover I make a decree what you shall do to these elders of the Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king's goods, even of the tribute beyond the River, expenses be given with all diligence to these men, that they be not hindered.

9That which they have need of, both young bulls, and rams, and lambs, for burnt offerings to the God of heaven; [also] wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the word of the priests who are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail; 10that they may offer sacrifices of pleasant aroma to the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king, and of his sons.

11Also I have made a decree, that whoever shall alter this word, let a beam be pulled out from his house, and let him be lifted up and fastened thereon; and let his house be made a dunghill for this: 12and the God who has caused his name to dwell there overthrow all kings and peoples who shall put forth their hand to alter [the same], to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I Darius have made a decree; let it be done with all diligence.

Luke 13:18-35

Luke Chapter 13

18He said, "What is God's Kingdom like? To what shall I compare it?

19It is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and put in his own garden. It grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the sky live in its branches." 20Again he said, "To what shall I compare God's Kingdom?

21It is like yeast, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened." 22He went on his way through cities and villages, teaching, and traveling on to Jerusalem.

23One said to him, "Lord, are they few who are saved?" He said to them, 24"Strive to enter in by the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter in and will not be able.

25Once the householder has risen, and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, 'Sir open up for us!' then he will answer and tell you, 'I don't know you or where you come from.' 26Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.' 27He will say, 'I tell you, I don't know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.' 28There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in God's Kingdom, and yourselves being thrown outside.

29They will come from the east, west, north, and south, and will sit down in God's Kingdom.

30Behold, there are some who are last who will be first, and there are some who are first who will be last." 31On that same day, some Pharisees came, saying to him, "Get out of here, and go away, for Herod wants to kill you." 32He said to them, "Go and tell that fox, 'Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I complete my mission.

33Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the next day, for it can't be that a prophet would perish outside of Jerusalem.' 34"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, like a hen gathers her own brood under her wings, and you refused!

35Behold, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'"
