Genesis 39:1-12

Genesis Chapter 39

1Joseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites that had brought him down there.

2ForeverOne was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man. He was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

3His master saw that ForeverOne was with him, and that ForeverOne made all that he did prosper in his hand.

4Joseph found favor in his sight. He ministered to him, and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

5From the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, ForeverOne blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of ForeverOne was on all that he had, in the house and in the field.

6He left all that he had in Joseph's hand. He didn't concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate. Joseph was well-built and handsome.

7After these things, his master's wife set her eyes on Joseph; and she said, "Lie with me." 8But he refused, and said to his master's wife, "Behold, my master doesn't know what is with me in the house, and he has put all that he has into my hand.

9He isn't greater in this house than I, neither has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. Then how can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" 10As she spoke to Joseph day by day, he didn't listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

11About this time, he went into the house to do his work, and there were none of the men of the house inside.

12She caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me!" He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside.

1 Samuel 17:1-30

1 Samuel Chapter 17

1Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle; and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.

2Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

3The Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.

4There went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

5He had a helmet of brass on his head, and he was clad with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

6He had brass shin armor on his legs, and a javelin of brass between his shoulders.

7The staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head [weighed] six hundred shekels of iron: and his shield bearer went before him.

8He stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, "Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.

9If he be able to fight with me, and kill me, then will we be your servants; but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then you will be our servants, and serve us." 10The Philistine said, "I defy the armies of Israel today! Give me a man, that we may fight together!" 11When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

12Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man was an old man in the days of Saul, stricken [in years] among men.

13The three eldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

14David was the youngest; and the three eldest followed Saul.

15Now David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

16The Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

17Jesse said to David his son, "Now take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry [them] quickly to the camp to your brothers; 18and bring these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your brothers are doing, and bring back news." 19Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

20David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the place of the wagons, as the army which was going out to the fight shouted for the battle.

21Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.

22David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.

23As he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words: and David heard them.

24All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were terrified.

25The men of Israel said, "Have you seen this man who has come up? He has surely come up to defy Israel. It shall be, that the man who kills him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel." 26David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, "What shall be done to the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" 27The people answered him in this way, saying, "So shall it be done to the man who kills him." 28Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, "Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride, and the naughtiness of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle." 29David said, "What have I now done? Is there not a cause?" 30He turned away from him toward another, and spoke like that again; and the people answered him again the same way.

2 Chronicles 13:4-22

19 verses

2 Chronicles Chapter 13

4Abijah stood up on Mount Zemaraim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, "Hear me, Jeroboam and all Israel: 5Ought you not to know that ForeverOne, the God of Israel, gave the kingdom over Israel to David forever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?

6Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up, and rebelled against his lord.

7There were gathered to him worthless men, base fellows, who strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them.

8"Now you think to withstand the kingdom of ForeverOne in the hand of the sons of David; and you are a great multitude, and there are with you the golden calves which Jeroboam made you for gods.

9Haven't you driven out the priests of ForeverOne, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves after the ways of the peoples of [other] lands? so that whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams, he may be a priest of [those who are] no gods.

10"But as for us, ForeverOne is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and [we have] priests ministering to ForeverOne, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites in their work: 11and they burn to ForeverOne every morning and every evening burnt offerings and sweet incense: the show bread also [set they] in order on the pure table; and the lampstand of gold with its lamps, to burn every evening: for we keep the instruction of ForeverOne our God; but you have forsaken him.

12Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with the trumpets of alarm to sound an alarm against you. Children of Israel, don't fight against ForeverOne, the God of your fathers; for you shall not prosper." 13But Jeroboam caused an ambush to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambush was behind them.

14When Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind them; and they cried to ForeverOne, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.

15Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, God struck Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.

16The children of Israel fled before Judah; and God delivered them into their hand.

17Abijah and his people killed them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

18Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied on ForeverOne, the God of their fathers.

19Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Bethel with its towns, and Jeshanah with its towns, and Ephron with its towns.

20Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and ForeverOne struck him, and he died.

21But Abijah grew mighty, and took to himself fourteen wives, and became the father of twenty-two sons, and sixteen daughters.

22The rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the commentary of the prophet Iddo.

Mark 10:28-45

Mark Chapter 10

28Peter began to tell him, "Behold, we have left all, and have followed you." 29Jesus said, "Most certainly I tell you, there is no one who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or land, for my sake, and for the sake of the Good News, 30but he will receive one hundred times more now in this time: houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land, with persecutions; and in the age to come eternal life.

31But many who are first will be last; and the last first." 32They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus was going in front of them, and they were amazed; and those who followed were afraid. He again took the twelve, and began to tell them the things that were going to happen to him.

33"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death, and will deliver him to the Gentiles.

34They will mock him, spit on him, scourge him, and kill him. On the third day he will rise again." 35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came near to him, saying, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we will ask." 36He said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" 37They said to him, "Grant to us that we may sit, one at your right hand, and one at your left hand, in your glory." 38But Jesus said to them, "You don't know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" 39They said to him, "We are able." Jesus said to them, "You shall indeed drink the cup that I drink, and you shall be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; 40but to sit at my right hand and at my left hand is not mine to give, but for whom it has been prepared." 41When the ten heard it, they began to be indignant towards James and John.

42Jesus summoned them, and said to them, "You know that they who are recognized as rulers over the nations domineer them, and their great ones dominate them.

43But it shall not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant.

44Whoever of you wants to become first among you, shall be bondservant of all.

45For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
