Exodus 21:7-27

21 verses

Exodus Chapter 21

7"If a man sells his daughter to be a female servant, she shall not go out as the male servants do.

8If she doesn't please her master, who has married her to himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has dealt deceitfully with her.

9If he marries her to his son, he shall deal with her as a daughter.

10If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marital rights.

11If he doesn't do these three things for her, she may go free without paying any money.

12"One who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death, 13but not if it is unintentional, but God allows it to happen: then I will appoint you a place where he shall flee.

14If a man schemes and comes presumptuously on his neighbor to kill him, you shall take him from my altar, that he may die.

15"Anyone who attacks his father or his mother shall be surely put to death.

16"Anyone who kidnaps someone and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

17"Anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.

18"If men quarrel and one strikes the other with a stone, or with his fist, and he doesn't die, but is confined to bed; 19if he rises again and walks around with his staff, then he who struck him shall be cleared: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall provide for his healing until he is thoroughly healed.

20"If a man strikes his servant or his maid with a rod, and he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished.

21Notwithstanding, if he gets up after a day or two, he shall not be punished, for he is his property.

22"If men fight and hurt a pregnant woman so that she gives birth prematurely, and yet no harm follows, he shall be surely fined as much as the woman's husband demands and the judges allow.

23But if any harm follows, then you must take life for life, 24eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25burning for burning, wound for wound, and bruise for bruise.

26"If a man strikes his servant's eye, or his maid's eye, and destroys it, he shall let him go free for his eye's sake.

27If he strikes out his male servant's tooth, or his female servant's tooth, he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake.

1 Kings 11:26-12:5

23 verses

1 Kings Chapter 11

26Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, a servant of Solomon, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow, he also lifted up his hand against the king.

27This was the reason why he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breach of the city of David his father.

28The man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor; and Solomon saw the young man that he was industrious, and he put him in charge of all the labor of the house of Joseph.

29At that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the way; now [Ahijah] had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field.

30Ahijah laid hold of the new garment that was on him, and tore it in twelve pieces.

31He said to Jeroboam, "Take ten pieces; for thus says ForeverOne, the God of Israel, 'Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to you 32(but he shall have one tribe, for my servant David's sake and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel); 33because they have forsaken me, and have worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon. They have not walked in my ways, to do what is right in my eyes, and [to keep] my statutes and my ordinances, as David his father did.

34"'However I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand; but I will make him prince all the days of his life, for David my servant's sake whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my statutes; 35but I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it to you, even ten tribes.

36To his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a lamp always before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.

37I will take you, and you shall reign according to all that your soul desires, and shall be king over Israel.

38It shall be, if you will listen to all that I command you, and will walk in my ways, and do what is right in my eyes, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with you, and will build you a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel to you.

39I will for this afflict the offspring of David, but not forever.'" 40Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam; but Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

41Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, aren't they written in the book of the acts of Solomon?

42The time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.

43Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.

1 Kings Chapter 12

1Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

2When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was yet in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam lived in Egypt, 3and they sent and called him), Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, 4"Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you." 5He said to them, "Depart for three days, then come back to me." The people departed.

Nehemiah 6:10-7:4

14 verses

Nehemiah Chapter 6

10I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, "Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you; yes, in the night will they come to kill you." 11I said, "Should a man like me flee? Who is there that, being like me, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in." 12I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

13He hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

14"Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear." 15So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth [day] of [the month] Elul, in fifty-two days.

16When all our enemies heard [of it], all the nations that were about us were afraid, and were reduced in their own estimation; for they perceived that this work was done by our God.

17Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and [the letters] of Tobiah came to them.

18For there were many in Judah sworn to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah [to be his] wife.

19Also they spoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.

Nehemiah Chapter 7

1Now when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed, 2I put my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the governor of the castle, in charge of Jerusalem; for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.

3I said to them, "Don't let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut the doors, and you bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, everyone in his watch, with everyone near his house." 4Now the city was wide and large, but there were few people there, and the houses had not been built.

Luke 22:35-62

28 verses

Luke Chapter 22

35He said to them, "When I sent you out without purse, wallet, and sandals, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing." 36Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword.

37For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: 'He was counted with transgressors.' For what concerns me has an end." 38They said, "Lord, behold, here are two swords." He said to them, "That's enough." 39He came out and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed him.

40When he was at the place, he said to them, "Pray that you don't enter into temptation." 41He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and he knelt down and prayed, 42saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done." 43An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.

44Being in agony he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.

45When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the disciples, and found them sleeping because of grief, 46and said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation." 47While he was still speaking, a crowd appeared. He who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Jesus to kiss him.

48But Jesus said to him, "Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?" 49When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" 50A certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

51But Jesus answered, "Let me at least do this"- and he touched his ear, and healed him.

52Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come against him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?

53When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn't stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness." 54They seized him, and led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter followed from a distance.

55When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard, and had sat down together, Peter sat among them.

56A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with him." 57He denied Jesus, saying, "Woman, I don't know him." 58After a little while someone else saw him, and said, "You also are one of them!" But Peter answered, "Man, I am not!" 59After about one hour passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean!" 60But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

61The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the Lord's word, how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times." 62He went out, and wept bitterly.
