Genesis 33:18-34:17

20 verses

Genesis Chapter 33

18Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan Aram; and encamped before the city.

19He bought the parcel of ground where he had spread his tent, from the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for one hundred pieces of money.

20He erected an altar there, and called it El Elohe Israel.

Genesis Chapter 34

1Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

2Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. He took her, lay with her, and humbled her.

3His soul joined to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young lady, and spoke kindly to the young lady.

4Shechem spoke to his father, Hamor, saying, "Get me this young lady as a wife." 5Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter; and his sons were with his livestock in the field. Jacob held his peace until they came.

6Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to talk with him.

7The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; such a thing ought not to be done.

8Hamor talked with them, saying, "The soul of my son, Shechem, longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.

9Make marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.

10You shall dwell with us, and the land will be before you. Live and trade in it, and get possessions in it." 11Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you will tell me I will give.

12Ask me a great amount for a dowry, and I will give whatever you ask of me, but give me the young lady as a wife." 13The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit, and spoke, because he had defiled Dinah their sister, 14and said to them, "We can't do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised; for that is a reproach to us.

15Only on this condition will we consent to you. If you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised; 16then will we give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

17But if you will not listen to us, to be circumcised, then we will take our sister, and we will be gone."

1 Samuel 7:13-8:22

27 verses

1 Samuel Chapter 7

13So the Philistines were subdued, and they no longer came within the border of Israel. The hand of ForeverOne was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

14The cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath; and Israel delivered its border out of the hand of the Philistines. There was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

15Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

16He went from year to year in circuit to Bethel and Gilgal, and Mizpah; and he judged Israel in all those places.

17His return was to Ramah, for his house was there, and he judged Israel there; and he built an altar to ForeverOne there.

1 Samuel Chapter 8

1When Samuel was old he made his sons judges over Israel.

2Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah: they were judges in Beersheba.

3His sons didn't walk in his ways, but turned aside after extortion, and took bribes, and perverted justice.

4Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel to Ramah; 5and they said to him, "Behold, you are old, and your sons don't walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations." 6But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." Samuel prayed to ForeverOne.

7ForeverOne said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them.

8According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so they also do to you.

9Now therefore listen to their voice: however you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who shall reign over them." 10Samuel told all the words of ForeverOne to the people who asked him for a king.

11He said, "This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them to him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots; 12and he will appoint them to him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and [he will set some] to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots.

13He will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

14He will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive groves, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

15He will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

16He will take your male servants, and your female servants, and your best young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work.

17He will take the tenth of your flocks: and you shall be his servants.

18You shall cry out in that day because of your king whom you shall have chosen; and ForeverOne will not answer you in that day." 19But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, "No; but we will have a king over us, 20that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles." 21Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of ForeverOne.

22ForeverOne said to Samuel, "Listen to their voice, and make them a king." Samuel said to the men of Israel, "Every man go to his city."

Section 3

2 Chronicles 6:12-27

16 verses

2 Chronicles Chapter 6

12He stood before the altar of ForeverOne in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands 13(for Solomon had made a bronze scaffold, five cubits long, and five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court; and on it he stood, and kneeled down on his knees before all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven;) 14and he said, "ForeverOne, the God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven, or on earth; you who keep covenant and loving kindness with your servants, who walk before you with all their heart; 15who have kept with your servant David my father what you promised him: yes, you spoke with your mouth, and have fulfilled it with your hand, as it is this day.

16"Now therefore, ForeverOne, the God of Israel, keep with your servant David my father what you have promised him, saying, 'There shall not fail you a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children take heed to their way, to walk in my law as you have walked before me.' 17Now therefore, ForeverOne, the God of Israel, let your word be verified, which you spoke to your servant David.

18"But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens can't contain you; how much less this house which I have built!

19Yet have respect for the prayer of your servant, and to his supplication, ForeverOne my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer which your servant prays before you; 20that your eyes may be open toward this house day and night, even toward the place where you have said that you would put your name; to listen to the prayer which your servant shall pray toward this place.

21Listen to the petitions of your servant, and of your people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: yes, hear from your dwelling place, even from heaven; and when you hear, forgive.

22"If a man sin against his neighbor, and an oath is laid on him to cause him to swear, and he comes and swears before your altar in this house; 23then hear from heaven, and do, and judge your servants, bringing retribution to the wicked, to bring his way on his own head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.

24"If your people Israel be struck down before the enemy, because they have sinned against you, and shall turn again and confess your name, and pray and make supplication before you in this house; 25then hear from heaven, and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them again to the land which you gave to them and to their fathers.

26"When the sky is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you; if they pray toward this place, and confess your name, and turn from their sin, when you afflict them: 27then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of your servants, and of your people Israel, when you teach them the good way in which they should walk; and send rain on your land, which you have given to your people for an inheritance.

Section 4

Mark 5:31-6:6

19 verses

Mark Chapter 5

31His disciples said to him, "You see the multitude pressing against you, and you say, 'Who touched me?'" 32He looked around to see her who had done this thing.

33But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

34He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be cured of your disease." 35While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler's house saying, "Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher any more?" 36But Jesus, when he heard the message spoken, immediately said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Don't be afraid, only believe." 37He allowed no one to follow him, except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.

38He came to the synagogue ruler's house, and he saw an uproar, weeping, and great wailing.

39When he had entered, he said to them, "Why do you make an uproar and weep? The child is not dead, but asleep." 40They ridiculed him, but he sent them all out. He took the father of the child, her mother, and those who were with him, and went in where the child was lying.

41Taking the child by the hand, he said to her, "Talitha cumi!" which means "Girl, I tell you, get up!" 42Immediately the girl rose up and walked, for she was twelve years old. They were amazed with great amazement.

43He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and commanded that something should be given to her to eat.

Mark Chapter 6

1He went out from there. He came into his own country, and his disciples followed him.

2When the Sabbath had come, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing him were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things?" and, "What is the wisdom that is given to this man, that such mighty acts come about by his hands?

3Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judah, and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" So they were offended at him.

4Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own relatives, and in his own house." 5He could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people, and healed them.

6He marveled because of their unbelief. He went around the villages teaching.
