Exodus 18:17-19:6

17 verses

Exodus Chapter 18

17Moses' father-in-law said to him, "The thing that you do is not good.

18You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.

19Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.

20You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

22Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.

23If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all of these people also will go to their place in peace." 24So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

25Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

26They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard causes to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.

Exodus Chapter 19

1In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that same day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

2When they had departed from Rephidim, and had come to the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness; and there Israel encamped before the mountain.

3Moses went up to God, and ForeverOne called to him out of the mountain, saying, "This is what you shall tell the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you to myself.

5Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice, and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own possession from among all peoples; for all the earth is mine; 6and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation.' These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel."

1 Kings 8:46-66

21 verses

1 Kings Chapter 8

46If they sin against you (for there is no man who doesn't sin), and you are angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive to the land of the enemy, far off or near; 47yet if they shall repent in the land where they are carried captive, and turn again, and make supplication to you in the land of those who carried them captive, saying, 'We have sinned, and have done perversely; we have dealt wickedly;' 48if they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies, who carried them captive, and pray to you toward their land, which you gave to their fathers, the city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name: 49then hear their prayer and their supplication in heaven, your dwelling place, and maintain their cause; 50and forgive your people who have sinned against you, and all their transgressions in which they have transgressed against you; and give them compassion before those who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them 51(for they are your people, and your inheritance, which you brought here out of Egypt, from the midst of the furnace of iron); 52that your eyes may be open to the supplication of your servant, and to the supplication of your people Israel, to listen to them whenever they cry to you.

53For you separated them from among all the peoples of the earth, to be your inheritance, as you spoke by Moses your servant, when you brought our fathers out of Egypt, LordOfMine ForeverOne." 54When Solomon had finished praying all this prayer and supplication to ForeverOne, he arose from before the altar of ForeverOne, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread out toward heaven.

55He stood, and blessed all the assembly of Israel with a loud voice, saying, 56"Blessed be ForeverOne, who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised. There has not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by Moses his servant.

57May ForeverOne our God be with us, as he was with our fathers. Let him not leave us, nor forsake us; 58that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his ordinances, which he commanded our fathers.

59Let these my words, with which I have made supplication before ForeverOne, be near to ForeverOne our God day and night, that he may maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel, as every day shall require; 60that all the peoples of the earth may know that ForeverOne, he is God. There is none else.

61"Let your heart therefore be perfect with ForeverOne our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as it is today." 62The king, and all Israel with him, offered sacrifice before ForeverOne.

63Solomon offered for the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered to ForeverOne, two and twenty thousand head of cattle, and one hundred twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of ForeverOne.

64That same day the king made the middle of the court holy that was before the house of ForeverOne; for there he offered the burnt offering, and the meal offering, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar that was before ForeverOne was too little to receive the burnt offering, and the meal offering, and the fat of the peace offerings.

65So Solomon held the feast at that time, and all Israel with him, a great assembly, from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of Egypt, before ForeverOne our God, seven days and seven days, even fourteen days.

66On the eighth day he sent the people away; and they blessed the king, and went to their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that ForeverOne had shown to David his servant, and to Israel his people.

Section 4

Luke 20:27-21:4

25 verses

Luke Chapter 20

27Some of the Sadducees came to him, those who deny that there is a resurrection.

28They asked him, "Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should take the wife and raise up children for his brother.

29So there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died childless.

30The second took her [to be his] wife, and he died childless.

31The third took her and, similarly all seven as well. They left no children, and died.

32After that the woman also died.

33So in the resurrection whose wife of them will she be? For all seven had her as a wife." 34Jesus said to them, "The children of this age marry, and are given in marriage.

35But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.

36For they can't die any more, for they are like the angels, and are children of God, being children of the resurrection.

37But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called ForeverOne 'The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' 38Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him." 39Some of the scribes answered, "Teacher, you speak well." 40They didn't dare to ask him any more questions.

41He said to them, "Why do they say that the AnointedOne is David's son?

42David himself says in the book of Psalms, 'ForeverOne said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, 43until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet."' 44"David therefore calls him Lord, so how is he his son?" 45In the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples, 46"Beware of those scribes who like to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts; 47who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: these will receive greater condemnation."

Luke Chapter 21

1He looked up and saw the rich people who were putting their gifts into the treasury.

2He saw a certain poor widow casting in two small brass coins.

3He said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow put in more than all of them, 4for all these put in gifts for God from their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had to live on."
