Jeremiah 3:22-4:26

Jeremiah Chapter 3

22Return, you backsliding children, I will heal your backsliding. "Behold, we have come to you; for you are ForeverOne our God.

23Truly in vain is [the help that is looked for] from the hills, the tumult on the mountains. Truly the salvation of Israel is in ForeverOne our God.

24But the shameful thing has devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.

25Let us lie down in our shame, and let our confusion cover us; for we have sinned against ForeverOne our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day. We have not obeyed the voice of ForeverOne our God."

Jeremiah Chapter 4

1"If you will return, Israel," says ForeverOne, "if you will return to me, and if you will put away your abominations out of my sight; then you shall not be removed; 2and you shall swear, 'As ForeverOne lives,' in truth, in justice, and in righteousness. The nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory." 3For thus says ForeverOne to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, "Break up your fallow ground, and don't sow among thorns.

4Circumcise yourselves to ForeverOne, and take away the foreskins of your heart, you men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

5Declare in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, 'Blow the trumpet in the land!' Cry aloud and say, 'Assemble yourselves! Let us go into the fortified cities!' 6Set up a standard toward Zion. Flee for safety! Don't wait; for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction." 7A lion is gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer of nations; he is on his way, he is gone forth from his place, to make your land desolate, that your cities be laid waste, without inhabitant.

8For this clothe yourself with sackcloth, lament and wail; for the fierce anger of ForeverOne hasn't turned back from us.

9"On that day," says ForeverOne, "the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder." 10Then I said, "Ah, LordOfMine ForeverOne! Surely you have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, 'You shall have peace;' whereas the sword reaches to the heart." 11At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, "A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow, nor to cleanse; 12a full wind from these shall come for me. Now I will also utter judgments against them." 13Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots [shall be] as the whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us! For we are ruined.

14Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you?

15For a voice declares from Dan, and publishes evil from the hills of Ephraim: 16"Tell the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, 'Watchers come from a far country, and raise their voice against the cities of Judah.

17As keepers of a field, they are against her all around, because she has been rebellious against me,'" says ForeverOne.

18"Your way and your doings have brought these things to you. This is your wickedness; for it is bitter, for it reaches to your heart." 19My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart; my heart is disquieted in me; I can't hold my peace; because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

20Destruction on destruction is cried; for the whole land is laid waste: suddenly are my tents destroyed, [and] my curtains in a moment.

21How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?

22"For my people are foolish, they don't know me. They are foolish children, and they have no understanding. They are skillful in doing evil, but to do good they have no knowledge." 23I saw the earth, and, behold, it was waste and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.

24I saw the mountains, and behold, they trembled, and all the hills moved back and forth.

25I saw, and behold, there was no man, and all the birds of the sky had fled.

26I saw, and behold, the fruitful field was a wilderness, and all its cities were broken down at the presence of ForeverOne, [and] before his fierce anger.

Section 3

Psalm 51

20 verses

Psalm 51

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

1Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.

2Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin.

3For I know my transgressions. My sin is constantly before me.

4Against you, and you only, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight; that you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge.

5Behold, I was born in iniquity. In sin my mother conceived me.

6Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts. You teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

7Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

8Let me hear joy and gladness, That the bones which you have broken may rejoice.

9Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all of my iniquities.

10Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

11Don't throw me from your presence, and don't take your holy Spirit from me.

12Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Uphold me with a willing spirit.

13Then I will teach transgressors your ways. Sinners shall be converted to you.

14Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation. My tongue shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

15LordOfMine, open my lips. My mouth shall declare your praise.

16For you don't delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it. You have no pleasure in burnt offering.

17The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

18Do well in your good pleasure to Zion. Build the walls of Jerusalem.

19Then you will delight in the sacrifices of righteousness, in burnt offerings and in whole burnt offerings. Then they will offer bulls on your altar.

Section 4

Romans 3:9-4:5

28 verses

Romans Chapter 3

9What then? Are we better than they? No, in no way. For we previously warned both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.

10As it is written, "There is no one righteous; no, not one.

11There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God.

12They have all turned away. They have together become unprofitable. There is no one who does good, no, not so much as one." 13"Their throat is an open tomb. With their tongues they have used deceit." "The poison of vipers is under their lips." 14"Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness." 15"Their feet are swift to shed blood.

16Destruction and misery are in their ways.

17The way of peace, they haven't known." 18"There is no fear of God before their eyes." 19Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God.

20Because by the actions of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight; for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

21But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets; 22even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus AnointedOne to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction, 23for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; 24being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in AnointedOne Jesus; 25whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God's forbearance; 26to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time; that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.

27Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of actions? No, but by a law of faith.

28So we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from the actions of the law.

29Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn't he the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30since indeed there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith, and the uncircumcised through faith.

31Do we then nullify the law through faith? May it never be! No, we establish the law.

Romans Chapter 4

1What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?

2For if Abraham was justified by actions, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.

3For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." 4Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.

5But to him who doesn't work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
