1The people were complaining in the ears of TheIAM (Yahweh) . When TheIAM (Yahweh) heard it, his anger was kindled; and TheIAM (Yahweh) 's fire burnt among them, and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. 2The people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to TheIAM (Yahweh) , and the fire abated. 3The name of that place was called Taberah, because TheIAM (Yahweh) 's fire burnt among them. 4The mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, "Who will give us flesh to eat? 5We remember the fish, which we ate in Egypt for nothing; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic; 6but now we have lost our appetite. There is nothing at all except this manna to look at." 7The manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like the appearance of bdellium. 8The people went around, gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it. Its taste was like the taste of fresh oil. 9When the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it. 10Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent; and the anger of TheIAM (Yahweh) was kindled greatly; and Moses was displeased. 11Moses said to TheIAM (Yahweh) , "Why have you treated with your servant so badly? Why haven't I found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me? 12Have I conceived all this people? Have I brought them forth, that you should tell me, 'Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which you swore to their fathers?' 13Where could I get meat to give to all this people? For they weep to me, saying, 'Give us meat, that we may eat.' 14I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. 15If you treat me this way, please kill me right now, if I have found favor in your sight; and don't let me see my wretchedness." 16TheIAM (Yahweh) said to Moses, "Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit which is on you, and will put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you not bear it yourself alone. 18"Say to the people, 'Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow, and you will eat flesh; for you have wept in the ears of TheIAM (Yahweh) , saying, "Who will give us flesh to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt." Therefore TheIAM (Yahweh) will give you flesh, and you will eat. 19You will not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days, 20but a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it is loathsome to you; because that you have rejected TheIAM (Yahweh) who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, "Why did we come out of Egypt?"'" 21Moses said, "The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand men on foot; and you have said, 'I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.' 22Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to be sufficient for them? Shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to be sufficient for them?" 23TheIAM (Yahweh) said to Moses, "Has TheIAM (Yahweh) 's hand grown short? Now you will see whether my word will happen to you or not." 24Moses went out, and told the people the words of TheIAM (Yahweh) ; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them around the Tent. 25TheIAM (Yahweh) came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was on him, and put it on the seventy elders: and it happened that when the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did so no more. 26But two men remained in the camp. The name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the Spirit rested on them; and they were of those who were written, but had not gone out to the Tent; and they prophesied in the camp. 27A young man ran, and told Moses, and said, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!" 28Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his chosen men, answered, "My lord (Adon) Moses, forbid them!" 29Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all TheIAM (Yahweh) 's people were prophets, that TheIAM (Yahweh) would put his Spirit on them!" 30Moses went into the camp, he and the elders of Israel. 31A wind from TheIAM (Yahweh) went out and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day's journey on this side, and a day's journey on the other side, around the camp, and about two cubits above the surface of the earth. 32The people rose up all that day, and all the night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails. He who gathered least gathered ten homers; and they spread them all abroad for themselves around the camp. 33While the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of TheIAM (Yahweh) was kindled against the people, and TheIAM (Yahweh) struck the people with a very great plague. 34The name of that place was called Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who lusted. 35From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth; and they stayed at Hazeroth.
18Thus says TheIAM (Yahweh) : Behold, I will turn again the captivity of Jacob's tents, and have compassion on his dwelling places; and the city shall be built on its own hill, and the palace shall be inhabited in its own way. 19Out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of those who make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small. 20Their children also shall be as before, and their congregation shall be established before me; and I will punish all who oppress them. 21Their prince shall be of themselves, and their ruler shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach to me: for who is he who has had boldness to approach to me? says TheIAM (Yahweh) . 22You shall be my people, and I will be your God (Elohim) . 23Behold, the storm of TheIAM (Yahweh) , [even his] wrath, is gone forth, a sweeping storm: it shall burst on the head of the wicked. 24The fierce anger of TheIAM (Yahweh) will not return, until he has executed, and until he has performed the intentions of his heart. In the latter days you will understand it.
1At that time, says TheIAM (Yahweh) , will I be the God (Elohim) of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people. 2Thus says TheIAM (Yahweh) , The people who were left of the sword found favor in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest. 3TheIAM (Yahweh) appeared of old to me, [saying], Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn you. 4Again will I build you, and you shall be built, O virgin of Israel: again you shall be adorned with your tambourines, and shall go forth in the dances of those who make merry. 5Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant, and shall enjoy [its fruit]. 6For there shall be a day, that the watchmen on the hills of Ephraim shall cry, Arise, and let us go up to Zion to TheIAM (Yahweh) our God (Elohim) . 7For thus says TheIAM (Yahweh) , Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout for the chief of the nations: publish, praise, and say, TheIAM (Yahweh) , save your people, the remnant of Israel. 8Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the uttermost parts of the earth, [and] with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her who travails with child together: a great company shall they return here. 9They shall come with weeping; and with petitions will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. 10Hear the word of TheIAM (Yahweh) , you nations, and declare it in the islands afar off; and say, He who scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as shepherd does his flock. 11For TheIAM (Yahweh) has ransomed Jacob, and redeemed him from the hand of him who was stronger than he. 12They shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow to the goodness of TheIAM (Yahweh) , to the grain, and to the new wine, and to the oil, and to the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all. 13Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old together; for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow. 14I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, says TheIAM (Yahweh) . 15Thus says TheIAM (Yahweh) : A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more. 16Thus says TheIAM (Yahweh) : Refrain your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears; for your work shall be rewarded, says TheIAM (Yahweh) ; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy. 17There is hope for your latter end, says TheIAM (Yahweh) ; and [your] children shall come again to their own border. 18I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself [thus], You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as a calf unaccustomed [to the yoke]: turn me, and I shall be turned; for you are TheIAM (Yahweh) my God (Elohim) . 19Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I struck on my thigh: I was ashamed, yes, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth. 20Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a darling child? for as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him, says TheIAM (Yahweh) .
A contemplation by Ethan, the Ezrahite. 1I will sing of the loving kindness of TheIAM (Yahweh) forever. With my mouth, I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. 2I indeed declare, "Love stands firm forever. You established the heavens. Your faithfulness is in them." 3"I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David, my servant, 4'I will establish your seed forever, and build up your throne to all generations.'" Selah. 5The heavens will praise your wonders, TheIAM (Yahweh) ; your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. 6For who in the skies can be compared to TheIAM (Yahweh) ? Who among the sons of the heavenly (El) beings is like TheIAM (Yahweh) , 7a very awesome God (El) in the council of the holy ones, to be feared above all those who are around him? 8TheIAM (Yahweh) , God (Elohim) of Armies, who is a mighty one, like you? IAM (Yah) , your faithfulness is around you. 9You rule the pride of the sea. When its waves rise up, you calm them. 10You have broken Rahab in pieces, like one of the slain. You have scattered your enemies with your mighty arm. 11The heavens are yours. The earth also is yours; the world and its fullness. You have founded them. 12The north and the south, you have created them. Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name. 13You have a mighty arm. Your hand is strong, and your right hand is exalted. 14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loving kindness and truth go before your face. 15Blessed are the people who learn to acclaim you. They walk in the light of your presence, TheIAM (Yahweh) . 16In your name they rejoice all day. In your righteousness, they are exalted. 17For you are the glory of their strength. In your favor, our horn will be exalted. 18For our shield belongs to TheIAM (Yahweh) ; our king to the Holy One of Israel. 19Then you spoke in vision to your saints, and said, "I have bestowed strength on the warrior. I have exalted a young man from the people. 20I have found David, my servant. I have anointed him with my holy oil, 21with whom my hand shall be established. My arm will also strengthen him. 22No enemy will tax him. No wicked man will oppress him. 23I will beat down his adversaries before him, and strike those who hate him. 24But my faithfulness and my loving kindness will be with him. In my name, his horn will be exalted. 25I will set his hand also on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers. 26He will call to me, 'You are my Father, my God (El) , and the rock of my salvation!' 27I will also appoint him my firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. 28I will keep my loving kindness for him forevermore. My covenant will stand firm with him. 29I will also make his seed endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven. 30If his children forsake my law, and don't walk in my ordinances; 31if they break my statutes, and don't keep my commandments; 32then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. 33But I will not completely take my loving kindness from him, nor allow my faithfulness to fail. 34I will not break my covenant, nor alter what my lips have uttered. 35Once have I sworn by my holiness, I will not lie to David. 36His seed will endure forever, his throne like the sun before me. 37It will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky." Selah. 38But you have rejected and spurned. You have been angry with your anointed. 39You have renounced the covenant of your servant. You have defiled his crown in the dust. 40You have broken down all his hedges. You have brought his strongholds to ruin. 41All who pass by the way rob him. He has become a reproach to his neighbors. 42You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries. You have made all of his enemies rejoice. 43Yes, you turn back the edge of his sword, and haven't supported him in battle. 44You have ended his splendor, and thrown his throne down to the ground. 45You have shortened the days of his youth. You have covered him with shame. Selah. 46How long, TheIAM (Yahweh) ? Will you hide yourself forever? Will your wrath burn like fire? 47Remember how short my time is! For what vanity have you created all the children of men! 48What man is he who shall live and not see death, who shall deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah. 49Lord (Adonai) , where are your former loving kindnesses, which you swore to David in your faithfulness? 50Remember, Lord (Adonai) , the reproach of your servants, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the mighty peoples, 51With which your enemies have mocked, TheIAM (Yahweh) , with which they have mocked the footsteps of your anointed one. 52Blessed be TheIAM (Yahweh) forevermore. Amen, and Amen. [BOOK III end]
14Therefore, my dear-ones (Agapetos) , flee from idolatry. 15I speak as to wise men. Judge what I say. 16The cup of blessing which we bless, isn't it a sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn't it a sharing of the body of Christ? 17Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread. 18Consider Israel according to the flesh. Don't those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? 19What am I saying then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God, and I don't desire that you would have fellowship with demons. 21You can't both drink the cup of the Lord (Kurios) and the cup of demons. You can't both partake of the table of the Lord (Kurios) , and of the table of demons. 22Or do we provoke the Lord (Kurios) to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? 23"All things are lawful for me," but not all things are profitable. "All things are lawful for me," but not all things build up. 24Let no one seek his own, but each one his neighbor's good. 25Whatever is sold in the butcher shop, eat, asking no question for the sake of conscience, 26for "the earth is the Lord (Kurios) 's, and its fullness." 27But if one of those who don't believe invites you to a meal, and you are inclined to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions for the sake of conscience. 28But if anyone says to you, "This was offered to idols," don't eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. For "the earth is the Lord (Kurios) 's, and all its fullness." 29Conscience, I say, not your own, but the other's conscience. For why is my liberty judged by another conscience? 30If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced for that for which I give thanks? 31Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32Give no occasions for stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the assembly of God; 33even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.
1Be imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ. 2Now I praise you, brothers, that you remember me in all things, and hold firm the traditions, even as I delivered them to you. 3But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God. 4Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. 5But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonors her head. For it is one and the same thing as if she were shaved. 6For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.
