Section 1
27"Benjamin is a ravenous wolf. In the morning he will devour the prey. At evening he will divide the spoil." 28All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them and blessed them. He blessed everyone according to his blessing. 29He instructed them, and said to them, "I am to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as a burial place. 31There they buried Abraham and Sarah, his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah, his wife, and there I buried Leah: 32the field and the cave that is therein, which was purchased from the children of Heth." 33When Jacob made an end of charging his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the spirit, and was gathered to his people.
1Joseph fell on his father's face, wept on him, and kissed him. 2Joseph commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father; and the physicians embalmed Israel. 3Forty days were fulfilled for him, for that is how many the days it takes to embalm. The Egyptians wept for him for seventy days. 4When the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, 5'My father made me swear, saying, "Behold, I am dying. Bury me in my grave which I have dug for myself in the land of Canaan." Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come again.'" 6Pharaoh said, "Go up, and bury your father, just like he made you swear." 7Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father's house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. 9There went up with him both chariots and horsemen. It was a very great company. 10They came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and there they lamented with a very great and severe lamentation. He mourned for his father seven days. 11When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians." Therefore, its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
Section 2
22The Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. 23When David inquired of TheIAM (Yahweh) , he said, "You shall not go up. Circle around behind them, and attack them over against the mulberry trees. 24It shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then you shall stir yourself up; for then TheIAM (Yahweh) has gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines." 25David did so, as TheIAM (Yahweh) commanded him, and struck the Philistines from Geba until you come to Gezer.
1David again gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2David arose, and went with all the people who were with him, from Baale Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God (Elohim) , which is called by the Name, even the name of TheIAM (Yahweh) of Armies who sits [above] the cherubim. 3They set the ark of God (Elohim) on a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in the hill: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart. 4They brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was in the hill, with the ark of God (Elohim) : and Ahio went before the ark. 5David and all the house of Israel played before TheIAM (Yahweh) with all kinds of [instruments made of] fir wood, and with harps, and with stringed instruments, and with tambourines, and with castanets, and with cymbals. 6When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put forth [his hand] to the ark of God (Elohim) , and took hold of it; for the cattle stumbled. 7The anger of TheIAM (Yahweh) was kindled against Uzzah; and God (Elohim) struck him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God (Elohim) . 8David was displeased, because TheIAM (Yahweh) had broken forth on Uzzah; and he called that place Perez Uzzah, to this day. 9David was afraid of TheIAM (Yahweh) that day; and he said, "How shall the ark of TheIAM (Yahweh) come to me?" 10So David would not move the ark of TheIAM (Yahweh) to be with him in the city of David; but David carried it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11The ark of TheIAM (Yahweh) remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite three months: and TheIAM (Yahweh) blessed Obed-Edom, and all his house. 12It was told king David, saying, "TheIAM (Yahweh) has blessed the house of Obed-Edom, and all that pertains to him, because of the ark of God (Elohim) ." David went and brought up the ark of God (Elohim) from the house of Obed-Edom into the city of David with joy. 13It was so, that, when those who bore the ark of TheIAM (Yahweh) had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened calf. 14David danced before TheIAM (Yahweh) with all his might; and David was clothed in a linen ephod. 15So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of TheIAM (Yahweh) with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. 16It was so, as the ark of TheIAM (Yahweh) came into the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before TheIAM (Yahweh) ; and she despised him in her heart. 17They brought in the ark of TheIAM (Yahweh) , and set it in its place, in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before TheIAM (Yahweh) . 18When David had made an end of offering the burnt offering and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of TheIAM (Yahweh) of Armies. 19He dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, both to men and women, to everyone a cake of bread, and a portion [of flesh], and a cake of raisins. So all the people departed everyone to his house. 20Then David returned to bless his household. Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, "How glorious the king of Israel was today, who uncovered himself today in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!" 21David said to Michal, "It was before TheIAM (Yahweh) , who chose me above your father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of TheIAM (Yahweh) , over Israel. Therefore will I celebrate before TheIAM (Yahweh) . 22I will be yet more vile than this, and will be base in my own sight. But of the handmaids of whom you have spoken, they shall honor me." 23Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.
Section 3
1Hezekiah began to reign when he was twenty-five years old; and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah. 2He did that which was right in the eyes of TheIAM (Yahweh) , according to all that David his father had done. 3He in the first year of his reign, in the first month, opened the doors of the house of TheIAM (Yahweh) , and repaired them. 4He brought in the priests and the Levites, and gathered them together into the broad place on the east, 5and said to them, "Listen to me, you Levites! Now sanctify yourselves, and sanctify the house of TheIAM (Yahweh) , the God (Elohim) of your fathers, and carry out the filthiness out of the holy place. 6For our fathers have trespassed, and done that which was evil in the sight of TheIAM (Yahweh) our God (Elohim) , and have forsaken him, and have turned away their faces from the habitation of TheIAM (Yahweh) , and turned their backs. 7Also they have shut up the doors of the porch, and put out the lamps, and have not burned incense nor offered burnt offerings in the holy place to the God (Elohim) of Israel. 8Therefore the wrath of TheIAM (Yahweh) was on Judah and Jerusalem, and he has delivered them to be tossed back and forth, to be an astonishment, and a hissing, as you see with your eyes. 9For, behold, our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity for this. 10Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with TheIAM (Yahweh) , the God (Elohim) of Israel, that his fierce anger may turn away from us. 11My sons, don't be negligent now; for TheIAM (Yahweh) has chosen you to stand before him, to minister to him, and that you should be his ministers, and burn incense." 12Then the Levites arose, Mahath, the son of Amasai, and Joel the son of Azariah, of the sons of the Kohathites; and of the sons of Merari, Kish the son of Abdi, and Azariah the son of Jehallelel; and of the Gershonites, Joah the son of Zimmah, and Eden the son of Joah; 13and of the sons of Elizaphan, Shimri and Jeuel; and of the sons of Asaph, Zechariah and Mattaniah; 14and of the sons of Heman, Jehuel and Shimei; and of the sons of Jeduthun, Shemaiah and Uzziel. 15They gathered their brothers, and sanctified themselves, and went in, according to the commandment of the king by the words of TheIAM (Yahweh) , to cleanse the house of TheIAM (Yahweh) . 16The priests went in to the inner part of the house of TheIAM (Yahweh) , to cleanse it, and brought out all the uncleanness that they found in the temple of TheIAM (Yahweh) into the court of the house of TheIAM (Yahweh) . The Levites took it, to carry it out abroad to the brook Kidron. 17Now they began on the first [day] of the first month to sanctify, and on the eighth day of the month came they to the porch of TheIAM (Yahweh) ; and they sanctified the house of TheIAM (Yahweh) in eight days: and on the sixteenth day of the first month they made an end. 18Then they went in to Hezekiah the king within [the palace], and said, "We have cleansed all the house of TheIAM (Yahweh) , and the altar of burnt offering, with all its vessels, and the table of show bread, with all its vessels. 19Moreover all the vessels, which king Ahaz in his reign did cast away when he trespassed, have we prepared and sanctified; and behold, they are before the altar of TheIAM (Yahweh) ." 20Then Hezekiah the king arose early, and gathered the princes of the city, and went up to the house of TheIAM (Yahweh) . 21They brought seven bulls, and seven rams, and seven lambs, and seven male goats, for a sin offering for the kingdom and for the sanctuary and for Judah. He commanded the priests the sons of Aaron to offer them on the altar of TheIAM (Yahweh) . 22So they killed the bulls, and the priests received the blood, and sprinkled it on the altar: and they killed the rams, and sprinkled the blood on the altar: they killed also the lambs, and sprinkled the blood on the altar. 23They brought near the male goats for the sin offering before the king and the assembly; and they laid their hands on them: 24and the priests killed them, and they made a sin offering with their blood on the altar, to make atonement for all Israel; for the king commanded [that] the burnt offering and the sin offering [should be made] for all Israel. 25He set the Levites in the house of TheIAM (Yahweh) with cymbals, with stringed instruments, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king's seer, and Nathan the prophet; for the commandment was of TheIAM (Yahweh) by his prophets. 26The Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets. 27Hezekiah commanded to offer the burnt offering on the altar. When the burnt offering began, the song of TheIAM (Yahweh) began also, and the trumpets, together with the instruments of David king of Israel. 28All the assembly worshiped, and the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded; all this [continued] until the burnt offering was finished. 29When they had made an end of offering, the king and all who were present with him bowed themselves and worshiped. 30Moreover Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praises to TheIAM (Yahweh) with the words of David, and of Asaph the seer. They sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshiped. 31Then Hezekiah answered, "Now you have consecrated yourselves to TheIAM (Yahweh) ; come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings into the house of TheIAM (Yahweh) ." The assembly brought in sacrifices and thank offerings; and as many as were of a willing heart [brought] burnt offerings. 32The number of the burnt offerings which the assembly brought was seventy bulls, one hundred rams, and two hundred lambs: all these were for a burnt offering to TheIAM (Yahweh) . 33The consecrated things were six hundred head of cattle and three thousand sheep. 34But the priests were too few, so that they could not flay all the burnt offerings: therefore their brothers the Levites helped them, until the work was ended, and until the priests had sanctified themselves; for the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctify themselves than the priests. 35Also the burnt offerings were in abundance, with the fat of the peace offerings, and with the drink offerings for every burnt offering. So the service of the house of TheIAM (Yahweh) was set in order. 36Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the people, because of that which God (Elohim) had prepared for the people: for the thing was done suddenly.
Section 4
1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness 2for forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing in those days. Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry. 3The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." 4Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.'" 5The devil, leading him up on a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6The devil said to him, "I will give you all this authority, and their glory, for it has been delivered to me; and I give it to whomever I want. 7If you therefore will worship before me, it will all be yours." 8Jesus answered him, "Get behind me Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord (Kurios) your God, and you shall serve him only.'" 9He led him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here, 10for it is written, 'He will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you;' 11and, 'On their hands they will bear you up, lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.'" 12Jesus answering, said to him, "It has been said, 'You shall not tempt the Lord (Kurios) your God.'" 13When the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until another time. 14Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and news about him spread through all the surrounding area. 15He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. 16He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened the book, and found the place where it was written, 18"The Spirit of the Lord (Kurios) is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed, 19and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord (Kurios) ." 20He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21He began to tell them, "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." 22All testified about him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth, and they said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?" 23He said to them, "Doubtless you will tell me this parable, 'Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.'" 24He said, "Most certainly I tell you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25But truly I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land. 26Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27There were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman, the Syrian." 28They were all filled with wrath in the synagogue, as they heard these things. 29They rose up, threw him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill that their city was built on, that they might throw him off the cliff. 30But he, passing through the midst of them, went his way. 31He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. He was teaching them on the Sabbath day, 32and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority. 33In the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34saying, "Ah! what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are: the Holy One of God!" 35Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" When the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36Amazement came on all, and they spoke together, one with another, saying, "What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!" 37News about him went out into every place of the surrounding region. 38He rose up from the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a great fever, and they begged him for her. 39He stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her. Immediately she rose up and served them. 40When the sun was setting, all those who had any sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. 41Demons also came out from many, crying out, and saying, "You are the Christ, the Son of God!" Rebuking them, he didn't allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. 42When it was day, he departed and went into an uninhabited place, and the multitudes looked for him, and came to him, and held on to him, so that he wouldn't go away from them. 43But he said to them, "I must preach the good news of the Kingdom of God to the other cities also. For this reason I have been sent." 44He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
